In normal times, we would have baseball right now. It would be fun, a nice relaxing way to spend an afternoon or evening and not worry about the rest of the world for a while. For now, the best we have is the Washington Nationals replaying broadcasts of their playoff games and posting clips from big moments on their social media accounts.
The 2018 Washington Nationals season ended with some big questions, such as what happened and where will Bryce Harper be next season? It also brought the re-balancing of an eight-year trend in my game attendance.
Twenty years ago(!) Bartolo Colon appeared in a video game for Nintendo 64. Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. had about 800 players, but none has managed the longevity of the great Bartolo.
On August 25, 1995, I screamed in absolute joy at the sight of a baseball on TV flying over a wall in Seattle’s Kingdome. I’m not a Mariners fan, and while Ken Griffey Jr. is one of my all-time favorite players and was responsible for that home run, there was a special reason that hit brought such joy. I won a contest.
I’ve been to 164 games at Nationals Park. Some of the first 163 were crazy in all sorts of ways that sports are crazy. None were anything like last night.
My advice to all you people out there in internetland is to pick something weird to follow over time. My entry in this field was working to answer the question of who would be the last active MLB player who appeared in the Nintendo 64 game Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr.
There’s a guy at Yahoo Sports named Mike Oz who does a fun, occasional feature where he and (usually) a baseball player or manager open a pack of 25-year-old baseball cards. Most of the guys are retired, so the cards feature teammates or people they either played or coached against.
It’s never a bad idea to step back and re-examine conventional wisdom. After all, just because things have been done the same way doesn’t mean that’s the best way to do them, right?
The Yankees and Alex Rodriguez announced Sunday his final game will be on Friday, a vastly shorter timeline than when he said earlier this year he would play through the end of his contract in 2017.
