With a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild Friday night, the Washington Capitals tied one of the most prestigious records in all of sports. That, of course, would be matching my longest ever streak of attending games with my chosen team winning.
I know of such a record because of the spreadsheet I have that accounts for pretty much every major sporting event I’ve attended dating back to 1993. One of the columns simply has Y or N denoting whether I was happy with the outcome.
The Caps are having a historic season, so it’s not crazy that they’re involved in my personal streak. Starting in October they broke the curse of the Nats and then got a little help from their arena mates the Washington Wizards.
Alex Ovechkin and friends were also a major part of the first time my winning streak hit seven games. That was in the spring of 2013 when a few Caps playoff games were sandwiched in between some Nats wins.
On April 7, those same two teams have the chance to do something epic and push my streak to nine in the course of a few hours. My brother and I will be jetting from the Nats’ home opener in the afternoon straight to the Verizon Center for a Caps game at night.
A winning start from the Nats would also bode well for another milestone I’d like to hit this season. For a long time, my overall record has been below .500. With the latest streak, being a winner is in reach.
