Text Art

If you have a spare moment today, I suggest you send a text to 57251 with a phrase like “send me X” where X is anything you can think of.  The response will come from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and it will be awesome.

At least, that has been my experience.  I read about the bot the museum set up in the New York Times, and from time to time I’ve been sending it queries.  Some of the responses are quite literal, but the best ones are the unexpected connections.  Take my first attempt:

On a smartphone screen it took me a minute to even catch the baseball game on the television. (For all of these, click my screenshot to see the full work of art at the museum’s site).  Who would have expected that result?

Other searches came back even more abstract:

I don’t disagree with this answer at all, but even a few weeks later I don’t remotely understand why it happened.  What I’ve enjoyed about this experience is that it really does in ways feel like going to a museum, where some pieces fail to grab you at all, but then you walk into the next room and there’s something perfect:

The more abstract the query, the more surprising the result.  Take something simple like “love” and imagine what picture might exist of it.  Well, just ask the bot:

And yes, because it’s 2017, you can express your desire for a photo using emojis:

After a while, I decided to get more personal with the bot to see what would happen:

And my latest one, because you have to give it a shot, right?

I’m not sure if Taco Bell will accept that as valid currency here, but overall I’d say this experience was worth it.  Give it a shot!
